My name is Mathew Farfan and I am a psychology major at CCNY. I took ENGL 11000 during my first semester of freshman year, expecting it to be an ordinary English class. Little did I know, it turned out to be anything but. During this semester, we read many articles about topics that sparked interest in me (like New York City, trigger warnings, over consumption, ect.) , and we would have very informative and elaborate discussions about these topics during class. My class was filled with other very intelligent and enlightened students that made every single group discussion enjoyable. For this class, we had to write a total of 3 major papers (one research paper, one rhetorical analysis paper, and one diagnostic essay). For these papers, i had to effectively analyze several different sources, as well as come up with different strategies in order to properly articulate, not only, what i’m trying to prove while writing these papers, but how my different sources acknowledge my argument. Although I did not do amazingly well on the research paper and diagnostic essay (rhetorical analysis essay has yet to be graded), the feedback provided to me by my professor assisted me a significant amount when it came to other writings. Feedback given to me by, not only my professor, but also my peers, helped me come up with more effective strategies for my writing, and in turn, made me a better writer. Overall, This class was my second favorite class (next to my major) that I took during my first semester of freshman year. This is mainly due to how much my writing abilities have evolved while taking this course. I have learned a multitude of different strategies in order to enhance my writing, such as quoting effectively, strengthening my knowledge of writing through peer grading and self-assessment, properly stating my argument without appearing overbearing, formulating paragraphs through properly analyzing my sources and finding deeper meaning to them, and I have learned how to properly search for said sources as well as how to cite these sources in my papers. I heavily look forward to applying all of my new-found writing knowledge into future writing assignments to come throughout my college career/life.
